Why is glass recycling so important?

Recycled Glass Being Remade into new glass bottles

Glass can be recycled indefinitely

Glass is completely recyclable and has an unlimited lifespan, allowing it to be melted and reused endlessly. This process enables the creation of new glass products without any degradation in quality.

Glass can take up to 4000 years to decompose

Glass can take as long as 4,000 years to decompose in a landfill. This lengthy decomposition time highlights the importance of recycling glass to prevent it from contributing to waste.

Glass pollution is serious threat to the environment

Throwing away glass poses a significant risk to the environment and its ecosystems. Similar to other materials, glass can injure animals that may cut themselves on sharp pieces or ingest it, leading to serious health issues.

But why is glass no longer being recycled?

Many factors have contributed to glass no longer being recycled in single stream recycling bins including:

Glass is becoming the contaminant

In a single stream recycling system, glass is increasingly becoming the contaminant. Broken glass can contaminate other recyclables like paper and cardboard, lowering their value.

Glass can be hazardous

Broken glass is not only a safety hazard to workers, but it can also damage machines at recycling facilities. As a result, glass is increasing processing costs.

Broken glass is difficult to sort

Most manufacturers require recyclable glass to be sorted by color in order to produce high quality glass bottles and jars.  Glass is difficult to sort when broken, and if broken down too finely, glass may become too difficult to reprocess. When recyclers find it too difficult or expensive to separate out glass, they send the entire stream to the landfill.

Glass is heavy

Glass is heavy and expensive to transport. Faced with high costs, some communities are paying to have the glass specially crushed for use in construction. And while this is certainly a use for glass, it is not necessary the best use.
